A multigated acquisition scan (MUGA) is a non-invasive diagnostic test that evaluates the pumping function of your heart. Small amounts of radiotracer are injected into your bloodstream for this test. During the test, a special camera will take pictures of the blood cells moving through your heart. The acquired data is used to calculate how well your heart moves blood with each heartbeat.
The MUGA scan provides a very accurate assessment of your heart’s pumping function. This test may be needed if you had a different test that was inconclusive or the MUGA may be indicated to monitor the pumping function of your heart while undergoing chemotherapy for cancer treatment.
